Šiluva town

While vacationing in the Raseiniai district, visit Šiluva, renowned for the apparition of the Virgin Mary. The first church in this area was built as early as the mid-15th century.

When the owners of Šiluva, the Zaviša family, converted to Protestantism, the administration of the house of prayer was transferred from Catholics to Evangelical Reformed believers. After news spread that in the early 17th century the Blessed Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus in her arms appeared to shepherds, the land was returned to the Catholics. Šiluva is the first Vatican-recognized and one of only five Virgin Mary apparition sites in Europe.

Devout Catholics and pilgrims flock to the Šiluva indulgence feast at the beginning of September.
