While vacationing in the Kaunas district, don't forget to visit Pakalniškiai Hillfort. It was built near the former village of Pakalniškiai, which was submerged by the Kaunas Reservoir due to the construction of the Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant.
According to one legend, a wooden castle of the ruler Vaišvydas once stood atop the hill, built by ancient Lithuanians. The castle protected the settlement from invasions for a long time. However, one day, enemy forces, with the help of local traitors, attacked and destroyed the castle. It was never rebuilt.
